We participated in the UN 2023 Water Conference held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York from March 22 to 24, 2023, and made presentations at side events organized by the Government of Indonesia and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to promote “Sustainable Lake Management” internationally. <Our Activities at the conference>
March 21
〇Attended the 6th UN Special Thematic Session on Water and Disasters held on the day before the UN Water Conference, and received a keynote speech (video) by His Majesty the Emperor of Japan. We also called on former Hungarian President Áder János, who attended the meeting, to participate in the 19th World Lake Conference to be held in Hungary in November.
March 22
〇Masahisa Nakamura, Vice President of ILEC, made a presentation at a side event organized by the Government of Indonesia and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and announced that ILEC will contribute to sustainable lake management by continuing to promote Capacity Building and ILBM (Integrated Lake Basin Management) to national governments by making use of its experience with Lake Biwa.
The Lakes Portal, a collection of information on lakes published by UNEP, also includes ILEC publications and Shiga Prefecture’s Mother Lake Goals (MLGs) initiatives.
〇Scientific Committee member, Ajit Pattnaik (India) participated as a panelist in a special event at the UN Headquarters and introduced a case study of a bottom-up approach with citizen participation in Chilika Lake (India).
March 23
〇Scientific Committee Chair, Walter Rast (USA) gave a presentation at a side event at the Permanent Mission of Canada to the United Nations, where he presented the significance of the “Sustainable Lake Management” resolution adopted at the Fifth United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA 5.2).
