“URGENT CALL TO SAVE OUR LAKES” PROMOTING GLOBAL AGENDA AND COLLABORATIVE EFFORTS FOR SUSTAINABLE LAKE MANAGEMENT AND RAISING MOMENTUM OF WORLD LAKE DAY at a high-level panel discussion in the 10th World Water Forum

The 10th World Water Forum will be held at the Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center in Indonesia from May 18th (Saturday) to 25th (Saturday), 2024, with the theme “Water for Shared Prosperity.” Focusing on lakes, a high-level panel, hosted by the Indonesian government, will be held to accelerate the implementation of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA5.2) resolution “Sustainable Lake Management (SLM)” adopted in 2022. This panel will aim to promote the initiative for the establishment of “World Lake Day.” Dr. Masahisa Nakamura, ILEC Vice President, will speak on this panel as Acting President of ILEC.

Furthermore, ILEC will present knowledge and experiences on Integrated Lake Basin Management (ILBM) in a special session discussing “Lake Restoration.”

Description: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Indonesian government will share a message regarding the resolution on “World Lake Day” from the UNEA. Each speaker will address the global agenda for “Sustainable Lake Management” and international cooperation. Furthermore, presentations will be given by various Indonesian government agencies on their efforts related to the implementation of SLM. Following this, there will be an exchange of views on appropriate goals and actions for international cooperation with the panel.

Theme: “SHARING OF KNOWLEDGE, SPIRIT AND ACTION ON SUSTAINABLE LAKE MANAGEMENT”

Speakers: Indonesian Government; International Organizations (such as UNEP); Shiga Prefecture, Japan; Dr. Masahisa Nakamura, ILEC Vice President; etc. 

Description: In this session, policies for sustainable lake management and past efforts and achievements will be shared. Furthermore, actions necessary to increase momentum towards the establishment of “World Lakes Day” will be discussed.
