Following the resolution of the UN Environment Assembly, initiatives on “Sustainable Lake Management (SLM)” have been gaining momentum globally. At the 2023 UN Water Conference, climate change adaptation and water quality improvement were central themes, leading to a proposal for the establishment of “World Lake Day.”

In response to this momentum, ILEC will organize “SLM Week – Promoting SLM: Co-Creating a Better Future” from September 25th (Wednesday) to 28th (Saturday), 2024.

This year, ILEC has focused on capacity building, aiming to expand youth engagement and networks. Participants from six countries will engage in environmental conservation activities (ecotourism, environmental education, citizen participation, etc.) in the Lake Biwa-Yodo River Basin, affirming the role of youth in SLM. Additionally, preparations are underway for the 20th World Lake Conference (WLC20) in Brisbane, Australia in July next year, focusing on launching a youth platform to enhance awareness and promote behavioral change.

On the final day, September 28th (Saturday), the “SLM Forum” will be held in a hybrid format. In addition to youth activities, presentations, and discussions by international experts, government officials, and international organizations will focus on themes such as “Source-to-Sea,” “World Lake Day,” and “Capacity Building.” Please join us.
